All students at University Prep High School are placed in an Advisory group of 17 students. These students and one highly qualified teacher (who we call an Advisor) remain together for two years. They have one Advisor and group of classmates for their 9th and 10th grade years, when they are in Junior Institute, and then they are placed with a new Advisor and group of classmates for 11th and 12th grade, when they are in Senior Institute.
The Advisor is the student’s key mentor at school. The Advisor works with the student and parent to create each student’s individual Learning Plan and helps each student and parent successfully participate in all school activities. Advisory is the key means by which we implement our one-student-at-a-time approach. Because students remain with each other and their Advisor for multiple years, we are able to offer them a very predictable, stable classroom environment that supports everyone investing maximum effort in learning. Teachers get to know each student very well, and this helps maximize opportunities for learning. Students get to know each other very well, developing strong support systems for one another. Most students describe their Advisory like a “second family.” Students, parents, and teachers build strong, collaborative relationships that are used to accelerate the development of every individual student. At the start of the second year, students know exactly what to expect. They have developed a strong bond with their teacher and peers, and everyone can get deeply involved in learning from day one.
All High School students also receive instruction from their Advisor in either Language Arts and/or Social Studies. They receive instruction in Science and Math courses from teachers with special training in those areas. Students also participate in one hour of elective classes every day. Elective offerings include: Orchestra, Percussion Class, Choir, Visual Art, Physical Education, Spanish, French, and supplementary reading and math class
At UPA High School, students are encouraged to follow their passions. Thus, we offer students a variety of extracurricular opportunities. The following are offered as extracurricular activities at University Prep High School:
- Supplementary tutoring in reading, writing and math
- Homework Help
- Athletics (football, cheerleading, basketball, volleyball, soccer, dance team)
- Student-sponsored clubs and activities such as Personal Defense, Big Sister Program, School Newspaper, Yearbook, and Community Service Projects
- Debate The University Prep High School debate team was founded in 2010 as a small team competing within the Detroit Urban Debate League. The team has grown to include more than two-dozen consistent debaters in the Novice, JV, and Varsity Divisions. Our team consistently competes in the Detroit-Urban Debate League, invitationals along with regional and national circuit tournaments. Our success has been a result of long hours, hard work, and dedication.

TUTORING IS ALSO AVAILABLE TO ALL UPHS STUDENTS. THOSE WHO FALL BELOW PASSING DUE TO DIFFICULTY WITH CONTENT ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND AFTER-SCHOOL TUTORING TWICE A WEEK FOR THAT SPECIFIC SUBJECT. IN ADDITION, UNIVERSITY PREP HIGH SCHOOL PROVIDES BOTH BEFORE AND AFTER-SCHOOL TUTORING FOR THOSE SEEKING REINFORCEMENT ACTIVITIES OR GENERAL ASSISTANCE. FOR STUDENTS WHO NEED TIME AND A QUIET SPACE TO COMPLETE ASSIGNMENTS, WE ALSO OFFER STUDY TABLES AND AN OPEN COMPUTER LAB AFTER SCHOOL.
Learn more about the attendance and tardiness policies enforced at UPA High School. Maintaining regular and timely school attendance is critical to academic achievement and school success. The charts below outline parent and staff/advisor responsibilities regarding student attendance and tardiness.

|Student absent for one (1) day||Parent must call the school by 9:00 to explain the absence and student’s expected return to school||Will call home if no call is received from parent. If message is left with office they must inform the teacher.|
|Student absent for three (3) days||Parent must bring a letter of excuse from doctor||Inform the front desk of the 3rd day. FSC/Receptionist will call parents to get updated information and send out letter to remind them of attendance policy.|
|Student absent for five (5) days within a trimester||Parent must attend a conference with the principal to create a contract to ensure consistent attendance at school||Schedule meeting with parent (and student, as appropriate) to develop improvement contract. If this meeting is ignored or not attended after 1(one) rescheduling the family will automatically be referred to the Hearing Committee.|
|Student absent for ten (10) days||Parent must meet with the Hearing Committee||The Principal will require parent/guardian to meet with the Hearing Committee to resolve any outstanding issues preventing regular school attendance.|

It is imperative that all students arrive to school on time for optimal learning. When students are late, they miss instruction, which affects academic achievement. In addition the morning lessons are disrupted for all and routines cannot be established. This is also consistent with removing your student early from school.
