DETROIT – 30 April 2019 – Today, University Prep Science & Math High School and Detroit Zoological Society announced a first-ever Zoology and Aquarium Program for students. The new partnership and program with U Prep is the first of its kind in Detroit and is a dynamic, hands-on course that crosses grade levels 9-12. The program will begin at the start of the 2019-2020 academic year.

Mark Ornstein, CEO, University Prep Schools, Danielle Jackson, Chief Academic Officer, University Prep Schools and Claire Lannoye-Hall, Curator of Education, Detroit Zoological Society made the announcement on Tuesday, April 30 at 8:30 a.m. on the Exhibit Stage at the Michigan Science Center to 150 University Prep Science & Math (UPSM) Middle School eighth-grade students who will have the opportunity to enter the program this upcoming fall as freshmen. Officials also announced the five UPSM Middle School eighth graders who were selected to receive scholarships to a summer zoo intensive.

This one-of-a-kind academic program is structured much like a four-year college degree, and only a select number of students will be taken in each year. Students will engage in the program as a specialty, a set of courses designed not only towards earning a college degree in zoological and aquarium studies, but will also place students on a career path in each arena. Developed with the support of the Detroit Zoological Society, the program will enroll 20-25 students and includes academic discourse and lecture, labs and field experiences.

“We are incredibly excited to partner with the Detroit Zoological Society and bring this first of its kind program to our students at University Prep Science & Math High School,” said Mark Ornstein, CEO of University Prep Schools. “Our partnership illustrates the importance of providing students growth opportunities inside and outside of the classroom; and offers an experience only found at U Prep Schools.’’
